How Loud Is an Air Conditioner? (50–75 dB)

Quick answer
50–75 dB
Air conditioners range from about 19 dB for a modern split-system indoor unit on low fan to 75 dB for a portable unit at full speed. For bedrooms, aim for under 45 dB.
19 dB (split indoor unit, low fan) to 75 dB (portable unit at high speed)
measured 1 m from the indoor unit
Unlimited at typical levels, but above 45 dB it disrupts sleep quality.

How an air conditioner compares to other sounds
| Sound source | Decibel level | Relative loudness |
|---|---|---|
| Split system, indoor unit (low) | 19–28 dB | |
| Split system, indoor unit (high) | 38–45 dB | |
| Window AC unit | 50–60 dB | |
| Portable AC unit | 50–75 dB | |
| Outdoor condenser unit at 1 m | 60–70 dB | |
| Ceiling fan | 30–45 dB |
Why portable units are so much louder
In a split system the compressor lives outside, so only the fan noise reaches the room. Portable and window units house the compressor inside the same box, adding 15–25 dB of mechanical noise to the fan.
That single design difference is why a split system can be quieter than a refrigerator while a portable unit competes with a vacuum cleaner.
What is too loud for a bedroom
The WHO recommends night-time bedroom noise below 30 dB for undisturbed sleep, with 40 dB as the interim target. A 55 dB portable AC exceeds that by a wide margin and typically reduces deep-sleep time even when the sleeper does not fully wake.
The counter-argument is masking: steady broadband AC noise can cover more disruptive intermittent sounds like traffic or barking. Steady noise at 40–45 dB is often less disruptive than 35 dB of unpredictable noise.
Reducing AC noise
Most improvements come from placement and maintenance rather than replacing the unit.
- Run the unit on a lower fan speed with a longer runtime instead of short high-speed bursts
- Clean or replace filters — restricted airflow raises fan noise several dB
- Isolate portable units from the floor with a rubber mat
- Seal the window exhaust kit properly; gaps cause whistling and let outdoor noise in

How many decibels is a quiet air conditioner?
Under 40 dB counts as quiet for an indoor unit. Premium split systems reach 19–25 dB on their lowest fan setting.
Is 55 dB loud for an air conditioner?
For a living room it is acceptable; for a bedroom it is too loud. 55 dB is around the level of moderate rainfall and exceeds WHO night-time guidance.
Does AC white noise help you sleep?
Steady broadband noise can mask more disruptive intermittent sounds. Many people sleep better with 40–45 dB of constant AC hum than with silence broken by traffic.
