How Loud Is It? Decibel Levels of Everyday Sounds

A gunshot is 140+ dB. A dishwasher is 45 dB. But numbers alone don't tell you whether a sound is safe, annoying, or damaging. Each guide below gives the measured decibel range, the distance it was measured at, safe exposure time, and how it compares to sounds you already know.

    Why decibel numbers need context

The decibel scale is logarithmic: every 10 dB increase is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness and a tenfold increase in sound energy. A quoted figure is also meaningless without a distance — sound drops about 6 dB every time you double your distance from the source. That's why a jet engine can honestly be described as 150 dB or 120 dB depending on where the meter stood.
